In the second leg of the UEFA Champions League ‘Round of 16' tie between VfB and FC Barcelona, the Spanish giants booked their place in the latter stages of the competition with a 4-0 win at home in the capacity filled 'Camp Nou Stadium'.
At short notice, VfB coach Christian Gross was forced the bring Georg Niedermeier into the centre of defence alongside Matthieu Delpierre in place of Serdar Tasci, who was unable to participate due to an adductor problem. Stefano Celozzi was back from illness to take up the right full-back position whilst Christian Träsch moved out to the right side of midfield at the expense of Timo Gebhart. Zdravko Kuzmanovic joined Sami Khedira in defensive midfield.
Messi strikes in unlucky 13th minute
Right from the outset, the UEFA Champions League title defenders left VfB very little room to operate in and created one opening after the next. Subsequently, in the 13th minute, Messi took on a pass from Yaya Touré just inside the VfB half of the pitch and drove forward toward Kuzmanovic and Träsch, neither of whom put in a telling tackle. The Argentine attacker picked his spot from 18 meters out and thumped the ball past Jens Lehmann into the top left corner to make it 1-0. In the 22nd minute, the Spanish league title holders caught the VfB defence cold once again. This time Messi fed Tourè, who in turn squared for Pedro to slot the ball home from close range and make it 2-0 at the break.
Messi bags a brace
There was again more of the same after the re-start with Barca dominating proceedings and the side from Stuttgart never looking like having the slightest chance. As in the first period, again Messi did the damage. From a break down the right, Dani Alves played a perfect back-heeled flick into the path of the '2009 World Footballer of the Year'.
Messi beat marker Gebhart with a kick turn and drove his shot past Lehmann from 16 meters out to make it 3-0. Barcelona substitute Bojan Krkic put the icing on the cake for the tournament favourites with his first touch of the ball. The youngster was fed through by fellow substitute Zlatan Ibrahimovic in the 89th minute and left the VfB keeper no chance of saving.
4-0 was to prove the final score in a game which saw VfB produce no more than a couple of harmless shots on the Spaniards goal, whilst at the same time, Barcelona underlined their intentions of being the first team ever to defend the UEFA Champions League title.
