Almost two weeks after having claimed their third ‘Oberliga Süd’ title, VfB made it to the German DFB-Cup final for the first time. At Ludwighafen’s ‘Südwest-Stadion‘ – where the Cannstatt Boys had celebrated a major triumph two years previously – a crowd of 60,000 saw VfB take on 1. FC Köln.
During the course of a hard-fought out final, VfB took an ever-increasing grip on proceedings and had some luck on their side, with Köln missing from the penalty-spot in the second-half, duly forcing the game into extra-time. VfB’s Erwin Waldner was to prove the match-winner, netting the decisive goal in the 96th minute. The VfB players subsequently celebrated the first domestic cup success in the club’s history.
