Nicolas Gonzalez fired VfB ahead from the penalty spot after 20 minutes following Cedric Brunner’s foul on Daniel Didavi inside the area. Didavi and Borna Sosa had pressurised Bielefeld into giving away possession in the build-up to the penalty.
VfB created the better opportunities as the match wore on, with Silas Wamangituka (32’) and Mateo Klimowicz (35’) both narrowly missing the target before Didavi doubled the Cannstatt boys’ lead from Klimowicz’s pass on the stroke of half-time.
Head coach Pellegrino Matarazzo:
“It was a good friendly. We worked hard at our training camp and you could see that today. We've ended on a positive note.”
The deserved 2-0 victory follows VfB’s 3-2 triumph over Hamburger SV in their opening Helden Cup match. Matarazzo’s charges end the tournament in first place and receive 30,000 euros on behalf of “Helden helfen”, which they can donate to a social project of their choice.
The VfB squad will now return to Stuttgart, where they will continue their preparations for the start of the 2020/21 Bundesliga season.
