After an uneventful first half in an attacking sense, Wataru Endo and Silas combined to release Guirassy down the right channel and the forward finished coolly to make it 1-0 (46’). VfB doubled their lead nine minutes later, Nartey converting from inside the area after fine link-up play between Tiago Tomas and Guirassy.
Kastanaras completes scoring
Bruno Labbadia’s team weren’t tested much defensively against the Swiss top-flight side but continued to cause their opponents problems in the final third. That said, Sion almost pulled a goal back 14 minutes from time but Nartey was able to scramble Filip Stojilkovic’s effort off the line. Kastanaras then made it 3-0 shortly before the final whistle, finishing off a flowing counterattack involving Naouirou Ahamada and Juan Perea.
“We’ll be back in Bundesliga action in a fortnight and we wanted to approach this game accordingly,” said Labbadia, who wasn’t entirely satisfied with his players’ on-pitch communication and decisiveness in attack but was pleased with VfB’s overall display. “The goals were very well-worked, and the result and clean sheet were good too because we need a sense of achievement in this period. With the goals in particular, you could see what we want to do.”
