Luzern friendly ends in draw

In their second pre-season friendly, VfB played out a hard-fought 0-0 draw with FC Luzern, who begin their Swiss league campaign next weekend.

Match summary:

In front of a crowd of 5,850, the first chance of the game fell to Luzern. After a well-worked move, the ball came to Thibault Klidje in the VfB penalty area, whose measured shot at the near post was well parried by Fabian Bredlow. That aside, Sebastian Hoeneß’s men had a good grip on the hosts apart from a brief spell around the 70-minute mark. VfB had more of the possession over the whole game and regularly had FCL pinned in their own half, but didn’t make the most of their few opportunities.

Hoeneß made multiple substitutions at half-time and in the 60th minute, with more and more young players coming on as the match wore on. VfB remained on top, although both teams fashioned good chances in the closing stages. Luca Raimund’s 65th-minute shot was saved by the Luzern goalkeeper, before Justin Diehl (twice) and Raul Paula both narrowly missed the target. At the other end, the score remained level thanks to some fine goalkeeping from Stefan Drljaca, who saved three Luzern shots.

Reaction:

Head coach Sebastian Hoeneß: “The game was very low on chances. On the one hand, that means we didn’t allow them much, but at the crucial moments we lacked the dynamism and movement to get behind the defence or to create two-on-one situations on the wing – that’s something we have to work on. Our youngsters did well in the second half, I was very pleased.”
