Matthias Zimmermann is currently eagerly working on his comeback, having suffered a cruciate ligament tear to his left knee in late August. In the meantime, VfB and the midfielder have agreed terms on an early contract extension until 2019. The 25 year old made the move to VfB from Borussia Mönchengladbach in the summer of 2015, initially playing for VfB’s reserves in the '3. Liga'. Towards the end of the 2015/2016 campaign, Matthias Zimmermann made his Bundesliga debut in the shirt with the infamous red hoop. Since then, Zimmermann has been a set fixture in the professional squad, making 27 '2. Bundesliga' (one goal), four Bundesliga and three DFB-Cup appearances for the Wasenelf.
Matthias Zimmermann: "I feel right at home at VfB and I am delighted about my contract extension. It’s a huge vote of confidence that those in charge at the club have extended my contract, in spite of me having a serious, long-term injury. That trust is something I want to put into effect out on the pitch again as soon as possible."
