Looking back
In the first half of the season, VfB played host to Wolfsburg in the Mercedes-Benz Arena on match-day 4. Shortly before the end of the first period, Chadrac Akolo netted to make it 1-0 – a score-line which stood at the end of the ninety minutes.
Trainer debut
Since Monday, Tayfun Korkut has been new head-coach of VfB. The Stuttgart born coach lives in Bad Cannstatt. In 2011, Korkut was active on Mercedesstraße, then as coach of VfB’s Under 19s.
Reunion
Before returning to Stuttgart, Mario Gomez spent a year and a half in Wolfsburg – making 45 Bundesliga appearances and scoring 17 goals for the Wolves. Prior to his departure, the striker also donned the captain’s armband for the Green-Whites. Current VfB captain Christian Gentner also has history with VfL Wolfsburg. Between summer 2007 and 2010, the midfielder made 99 league appearances for the Wolves, with whom he celebrated his second Bundesliga title win in 2009.
With the exception of just two, intermittent seasons, Daniel Didavi wore the shirt with the infamous red hoop from 1998 until 2016, making 125 Bundesliga appearances for VfB, before moving on to VfL Wolfsburg in the summer of 2016. Josip Brekalo was released on loan to VfB from the Wolves early in 2017. Last May, the winger celebrated the second division title win with VfB and thus promotion back to the Bundesliga. In January 2018 he returned to Wolfsburg.
Premiere goal
In May 2006, Christian Gentner scored his first ever Bundesliga goal against VfL Wolfsburg. The midfielder’s strike earned the Cannstatt Boys a 2-1 victory.
