VfB have strengthened the squad with an experienced Bundesliga pro: Gonzalo Castro has made a total of 358 Bundesliga appearances in his career thus far, scoring 31 goals and providing 73 assists along the way. In addition, with his former clubs Bayer 04 Leverkusen and Borussia Dortmund, Castro made some 84 international appearances - Champions and Europa League (seven goals, eleven assists), as well as pulling on the German national team jersey on five occasions. The midfielder had been with Borussia Dortmund since the summer of 2015 – winning the DFB-Cup with BVB in 2016/2017. As from the start of the 2018/2019 campaign, Gonzalo Castro will wear the number 8 shirt for VfB.
