“We were far away from the sport we love”

In an interview with VfB TV, Gregor Kobel talks about gradually returning to some form of normality during the coronavirus crisis, as well as his mental and physical well-being during the last few weeks.

Gregor Kobel on…

…returning to a semblance of normality:

“It’s strange and unusual to come here and not be allowed to approach anyone, always having to keep a certain distance and only going on the pitch in small groups. Our colleagues from the medical department wear masks and we’re sort of smuggled in one after another. We accept it and try to make the best of the situation, while still doing our best to do our job.”

…his personal training regime in recent weeks:

“In the last few weeks I’ve had one or two minor knocks, which I’ve managed to recover from. I use the time to work on myself, my physique and my athleticism in order to come back fitter than before. That’s why I’ve been following a very precise and tightly monitored training programme. We’ve also been trying to work on our basic fitness at home, but that’s no replacement for proper goalkeeping or team training.”

…being back on the training pitch:

“The last few weeks have felt very long without training, teammates and a ball. We were far away from the everyday life and the sport we love. When you’re then able to see one or two people – from a distance at least – and go back on the pitch, it doesn’t get much better than that.”
