The Argentina international moved to the Bad Cannstatt club in July 2018 from Argentinian top-flight club Asociación Atlética Argentinos Juniors. During his first year, Gonzalez made 30 Bundesliga appearances for VfB, posting two goals and three assists. The striker was VfB’s top scorer last season with 14 goals and another three assists, playing a key role in the team’s immediate return to the top flight.
The 22-year-old recently scored in five consecutive competitive matches – three for VfB in the league and twice for Argentina in World Cup qualifying, having earned the first of his five senior international caps to date just over a year ago.
Sporting director Sven Mislintat:
“We’re very pleased with how Nico has developed in recent months. He was an important factor in our promotion back to the Bundesliga and he’s demonstrated his qualities again this season. Nico feels happy at VfB and we believe he’ll continue his positive development. We’re really looking forward to the future with Nico.”
Nicolas Gonzalez:
“I feel at home here and I’m very happy about the early contract extension. Getting promoted back to the Bundesliga was very important for VfB and our progress this season has also been very positive. I want to help us continue on this path and I’ll work hard to improve myself as a player.”
