VfB has decided on an early extension to Maxime Awoudja’s contract, adding on an extra year. The defender’s deal was set to expire on 30 June 2022, but it will now run until 30 June 2023, with Awoudja also going on loan for the coming season to WSG Tirol.
Awoudja had already gone out on loan in the second half of last season, to third-division side Türkgücü München. The central defender played 11 matches in the third tier, scoring two goals. The 23-year-old joined VfB from Bayern Munich in summer 2019, but suffered a ruptured Achilles tendon in training in May 2020 and was out for a number of months after that.
"After his serious injury and then the successful loan spell at Türkgücü that followed, we wanted to get Maxime back on a medium-term path into our first-team squad by extending his contract and then sending him on loan to WSG," said sporting director Sven Mislintat. "The hard work that Maxime put in after his injury and the fact that he has made such a successful comeback proves his character and his real mental strength.”
