Gonzalo Castro joined VfB in 2018 and has gone on to make 83 appearances in all competitions, racking up eight goals and 14 assists. “Gonzo” has pulled on the VfB shirt 24 times this season as team captain, scoring three goals and setting up another three. Following the club’s relegation from the Bundesliga, Castro played an important role in immediate promotion back up from the second division last season, with three goals and seven assists in 28 appearances.
“In light of very difficult financial conditions as a result of the coronavirus pandemic, we have decided not to offer Gonzo a new contract and instead trust in the development potential of our young talents,” said sporting director Sven Mislintat. “We would already like to thank Gonzo for his great commitment in a VfB shirt and wish him all the best for the future on and off the pitch. Before that, though, we want to have as much success as possible in the games left.”
“It’s been an intense period at VfB with highs and lows,” said Castro. “Getting promoted straight after what was a very disappointing relegation for all of us was a particularly emotional moment. I want to do as well as possible with VfB in the final games of the season – it’s a shame I can’t say goodbye to the fans in the stadium because of COVID-19. I wish VfB all the best for the future.”
