While nine members of the VfB squad are representing their countries over the coming days, those who stayed behind in Bad Cannstatt are being put through their paces on the training pitch. Aside from the spring temperatures, memories of Saturday’s crucial home win are also keeping spirits high among the players. “It was an emotional and intense game against Augsburg,” said Tiago Tomás, who fired VfB to a 3-2 victory. “We absolutely wanted to win and I’m happy that I was able to score the winner. The atmosphere and the support from the stands were great. I’m convinced our fans also helped us get the win.
“The last three games have been difficult,” added the Portuguese. “In two of them we managed to come from behind to win. That’s mostly down to our team, our mentality and our will to win. We never give up until the final whistle. Even when we lose, we never lose hope – that’s special.”
Tomás has been at the club for two months now, picking up eight points and scoring three goals in that time. “The last two months have been intense and a lot of things were new to me,” he explained. “It was a big step at the beginning, but I’ve settled well into the side and the country and am now able to help the team the way it helps me. I just want to continue like this until the end of the season. I hope we can achieve our goals together – the fans and the club deserve it.”
The forward is enjoying life on and off the pitch, having already grown incredibly fond of the Baden-Württemberg capital. “Stuttgart is a cool city – I really like being here,” he said. “During my first few days I took in the sights with my friends and family. I think the people here in Stuttgart like me, and that feels very good.”
