VfB Stuttgart have agreed a deal with FC Bayern Munich to sign Alexander Nübel on a one-year loan. The 26-year-old goalkeeper, who will wear the number 33 shirt this term, is joining VfB with immediate effect.
Nübel came through the youth ranks at SC Paderborn before making his Bundesliga debut for Schalke during the 2015/16 campaign. After joining Bayern ahead of the 2020/21 season, the 17-time Germany U21 international was loaned to Ligue 1 outfit AS Monaco 12 months later.
The 26-year-old has made 46 Bundesliga appearances to date, as well as 76 in Ligue 1 and 24 in European competition – including four UEFA Champions League outings.
“We always intended to make a bid for Alexander Nübel if an appropriate opportunity arose,” said VfB Stuttgart sporting director Fabian Wohlgemuth. “Alex is an outstanding goalkeeper who has proven his qualities in the Bundesliga and with Monaco in recent years. We’re pleased that he’s has opted for VfB and that we were able to bring the negotiations with FC Bayern to a successful conclusion.”
“The talks with Fabian Wohlgemuth and Sebastian Hoeness were key in my decision to join VfB,” said Nübel. “They told me about the club, the city and the brilliant atmosphere inside the stadium with the wonderful support they get from the fans. I’m really pleased to be back in the Bundesliga with VfB. I’ve already played with Waldemar Anton and Maximilian Mittelstädt for the national team. Together with them and the rest of the players, I’m going to prepare as best I can for what will hopefully be a successful season.”
