Leonidas Stergiou signs long-term VfB deal

VfB Stuttgart have made Leonidas Stergiou’s loan deal permanent. The Swiss defender has signed a contract until 30 June 2028.

VfB’s squad planning for next season continues to gather pace, with Leonidas Stergiou – who has spent the 2023/24 campaign on loan from FC St. Gallen – signing a long-term contract with the Cannstatt club through to 30 June 2028.

A reliable presence in the VfB rearguard in recent games, Stergiou has also been a threat at the other end of the pitch, as evidenced by his first goal for the club in the 3-1 home victory over Bayern Munich. The 22-year-old has appeared in 15 Bundesliga matches and three DFB Cup ties for VfB this term.

VfB sporting director Fabian Wohlgemuth: “Leo has handled the step up to the Bundesliga very well and underlined his value to the team on multiple occasions. We’ve been just as impressed by his footballing abilities as his professional attitude. Leo has always been there when we needed him and continued to work hard on his development, even when he wasn’t playing much. We’re pleased that Leo will continue to wear the VfB shirt in the future.”

Leonidas Stergiou: “I’m very happy with the trust that has been placed in me. I want to continue to justify that with good performances. I’ve learned a lot this year. I needed a bit of time to settle initially, but I joined an outstanding team. For me, it was about learning a lot and being there when I was needed. The coaching team and the entire staff also deserve credit. I’m very happy with how the season has gone.”
