Fabian Rieder is currently in Stuttgart, with Switzerland having set up camp for the EURO in the Baden Württemberg capital. The 22-year-old and his international team-mates trained on VfB’s pitches last week, and next season, this will be what Rieder calls home, after VfB picked him up on loan for the next 12 months from French top-flight side Stade Rennais.
Rieder made 21 appearances for the team which finished tenth in Ligue 1 last season, scoring three goals. Prior to that, he was at Young Boys Berne for six seasons, winning three Swiss league titles and the 2023 Swiss Cup in the process.
Rieder has acquired international experience with both Young Boys and Rennes in the UEFA Conference League, the Europa League and even the Champions League. He has also made his way up through the Swiss national youth teams from U-15 level right through to the seniors, making his debut in November 2022 at the World Cup and picking up a total of eight caps so far – three at the current European Championship, the most recent coming on Sunday in the 1-1 draw against Germany. In the previous two groups games, he had come off the bench, but against the host nation, he was part of the starting line-up and featured for the first 65 minutes.
VfB would like to wish Rieder all the very best for the remainder of the EURO and looks forward to welcoming him to Bad Cannstatt in the near future.
“With his qualities as a footballer and the experience that he has already acquired, despite still being relatively young, Fabian Rieder is an ideal fit for us,” said VfB sporting director Fabian Wohlgemuth. “We are convinced that he will quickly become an important part of our play and would like to welcome him to the club.”
“VfB is an incredible club with wonderful fans and I’m really looking forward to playing in front of them,” said Rieder. “I’m hoping to use my qualities and my experience to help VfB with the challenges that lie ahead.”
