Anton joined VfB from Hannover 96 in July 2020 and rapidly established himself as one of the first names on the team-sheet. He has gone on to make 123 competitive appearances for the club, scoring three goals and assisting on another six.
The 27-year-old is exemplary in defence and played a decisive role in VfB managing to avoid relegation from the Bundesliga last season, and has carried that strong form through into this year’s campaign, which has also seen him take on the captain’s armband.
“Waldemar Anton has become a fixture in our back line and a genuine leader and captain both on and off the pitch,” said VfB sporting director Fabian Wohlgemuth. “Waldi consistently trains and plays at the highest level and also shows an excellent mentality. We’re delighted that we were able to agree terms on an extension ahead of getting back onto the pitch in the new calendar year.“
“I can really feel the trust that VfB shows me day in, day out,” said Anton. “We’re on the same wavelength, so much has fallen into place here, I feel settled and as such, I’m very happy with the contract extension. I’m really looking forward to playing in a VfB jersey for years to come.“
