Match summary

VfB made the perfect start, taking the lead through Nick Woltemade in the ninth minute after fine work from Maximilian Mittelstädt and Deniz Undav.

Philipp denies Karazor

Sebastian Hoeneß’s side were firmly in control in the first half, pressing their opponents high up the pitch and pinning Hoffenheim back inside their own half. Atakan Karazor almost doubled their advantage on the half-hour mark from Undav’s pass, but goalkeeper Luca Philipp showed remarkably quick reflexes to tip the ball onto the post.

Alex Nübel thwarted Andrej Kramaric at the other end (45’+1), but VfB thoroughly deserved their 1-0 half-time lead. 

VfB fail to take chances

Another fine Undav pass released the unmarked Angelo Stiller in the 59^th minute, but Philipp was once again equal to the shot. Undav and Woltemade both failed to make the most of further good opportunities with 18 minutes remaining, and Hoffenheim took full advantage to level the match.

Orban equalises

Just two minutes later, Gift Orban capitalised on a defensive lapse to make it 1-1. Undav and Chris Führich could have put VfB back in front with 12 minutes left on the clock, but the visitors ultimately had to settle for a share of the spoils.

Goals

9^th minute: Mittelstädt plays an excellent pass from the left into Undav, who lets the ball roll through to Woltemade. The unmarked striker slams his shot into the net to open the scoring.

74^th minute: Jeff Chabot’s attempted clearance ends up at the feet of Orban, who skips past Mittelstädt before firing home the equaliser.
