Match summary
Sebastian Hoeneß’s side lived up to their role as favourites against Regensburg, dominating from the outset and taking the lead after ten minutes through Enzo Millot.
Chase doubles lead
Defender Anrie Chase doubled VfB’s advantage nine minutes later, getting on the end of Pascal Stenzel’s free-kick and sending a perfectly timed header past goalkeeper Felix Gebhardt to give the visitors a two-goal half-time lead.
Woltemade completes scoring
The 15,000 spectators were treated to more of the same in the second period as Stuttgart continued to control proceedings, with Nick Woltemade all but securing victory with VfB’s third goal in the 61st minute.
Fabian Bredlow, who started in goal in place of Alex Nübel, made a key contribution by keeping a clean sheet, thereby helping Hoeneß’s charges confirm their place in the DFB Cup quarter-finals.
Goals
10th minute: Millot turns away from Alexander Bittroff and Louis Breunig on the edge of the area and sends a low, well-placed shot into the right-hand corner.
19th minute: Stenzel’s free-kick is met by Chase, who heads home to double VfB’s lead.
61st minute: Just a few moments after coming off the bench, Justin Diehl spots a gap in the Regensburg defence and releases Woltemade, who makes no mistake to make it 3-0.
Special mentions
Angelo Stiller captained VfB for the first time on his 55th competitive appearance for the club.
Yannik Keitel made his full VfB debut in Regensburg.
Chase scored his first VfB goal on his 17th first-team appearance.
Woltemade scored for the third DFB Cup game in succession, having found the net twice against Preußen Münster and once against 1. FC Kaisterslautern.
