Sprinting here, there and everywhere, dribbling at top speed and threading passes through to his team-mates: when you see him in training with the rest of the VfB team, it is clear that Jamie Leweling has well and truly put his thigh injury behind him. At the first session of the year on Thursday, he was waving to the many fans in attendance and joking with the rest of the squad.
“It was a relatively long lay-off for me, which means I’m all the more delighted to be back in training with the team,” Leweling said, before adding four words that will warm the hearts of all white-and-red fans, namely: “I feel good again.” As you would expect, he can hardly wait for the friendly on Sunday at 14:00 CET against Ajax. “They’re a good team and a huge club, but we want to win and at the very least put in a good performance,” the 23-year-old said.
Leweling is hoping to be fully fit and ready for the return of the Bundesliga season, away to FC Augsburg on 12 January at 17:30 CET.
