VfB extend contract with Sebastian Hoeneß

The VfB Stuttgart head coach and his assistant David Krecidlo have signed new deals at the club valid until 30 June 2028.

Sebastian Hoeneß has been VfB Stuttgart head coach for almost two years now, having taken over the reins in April 2023 with the team in 18th place in the Bundesliga. He steered the side to safety that year via the relegation play-offs before guiding them to a runners-up finish the following season, thereby earning a place in the UEFA Champions League.

Under Hoeneß and his coaching staff, several players have developed into senior internationals; indeed, there are currently more VfB representatives in the latest Germany squad (five) than there are from any other club.

Following his contract extension last year that lengthened his stay in Stuttgart until 2027, Hoeneß has now agreed a new deal until 30 June 2028.

His assistant David Krecidlo has also signed an extension until 30 June 2028, having arrived at the club with Hoeneß. In addition to his coaching duties, Krecidlo is currently in the process of attaining his pro coaching badge with the German Football Association (DFB).

VfB CEO Alexander Wehrle: “VfB and Sebastian Hoeneß have worked in perfect harmony from day one. Sebastian led our team from acute relegation danger to the runners-up spot and into the Champions League. He has implemented a clear style of play and improved many players individually.

“We have always known that we want to work with Sebastian in the long term. Our day-to-day working relationship is characterised by trust and Sebastian is a perfect fit for us and our goals, both professionally and personally. We are confident that we will continue on our successful path together and are delighted about the contract extension.”

VfB head coach Sebastian Hoeneß: “I’m very pleased about the contract extension because I'm convinced that we can still achieve a lot together. When I joined VfB almost two years ago, we were in a challenging situation with the team in 18th place in the table. Nevertheless, if felt like the right move. And it feels just as right now to extend my contract.

“The working relationship with the people at management level including Alex Wehrle, Fabian Wohlgemuth and Christian Gentner, has been very trusting from the outset. After the relegation play-offs, together we have embarked on a successful path that has taken us all the way to the Champions League.

“We want to and have to continue to give our all at every level of the club in order to be successful in the long term. That includes further developing and strengthening our team. We want to be able to play in European competition in the long term. Now it’s time to focus our energies on the final straight of the Bundesliga season. And of course, we’re all looking forward to the DFB Cup semi-final and are determined to take the last step towards the final in Berlin.”
