"The game was a test of willpower"

New signing Yannik Keitel on his first few weeks as a VfB player, the club’s pre-season so far and the upcoming trip to Japan.

Yannik, your first training sessions and friendly matches as a VfB player are behind you. How do you assess your first few weeks at the club?

Yannik Keitel: “I’m having a great deal of fun with the lads. I’ve settled into the team very quickly. The training sessions are a lot of fun and I already knew a few of the boys, so I can look back very positively on these first few weeks.”

You’re unbeaten in your friendly matches so far. The last game in Heilbronn was particularly challenging, mainly because of the weather…

Yannik Keitel: “Yes, you could say that – the weather was a real challenge. In 33C heat in the sun, that game was a test of willpower for us. But it’s good that we had to establish our routines in conditions which may reoccur, particularly at the start of the season. That’s why it’s good we were given that kind of test.”

How excited are you to play in the Champions League with VfB next season?

Yannik Keitel: “Enormously, of course. We’re all looking forward to it and are working hard to pick up where we left off last season. Generally speaking, I’m incredibly excited about the fans, the stadium and the atmosphere. It’s always been really impressive when I’ve come here. I’m really looking forward to the games.”

You’re off to Japan this week. What are your thoughts on the upcoming trip?

Yannik Keitel: “I’ve actually always wanted to go to Japan, so I’m really looking forward to it. I hope we’ll get a taste of the culture, but our main focus is obviously on training and our games.”
