Match summary:
Against a Sporting side who were unbeaten so far, VfB trailed after just two minutes but fought back with great character and a strong performance. Goals from Benny Boakye (34’) and Efe Korkut (42’) gave them a 2-1 lead at half-time.
In a hard-fought second half, Julian Lüers made it 3-1 in the 76th minute. After that, Sporting worked tirelessly to get back into the game but could only reduce the deficit through Rafael Nel (90’+7) as the VfB U19s showed team spirit to see out a narrow and deserved 3-2 victory.
Head coach Nico Willig: "I had a good feeling throughout the match. We played our way in brilliantly after conceding early, controlled the match and deservedly turned it around. It's normal that it gets tense again towards the end. We were flagging but ultimately the win was deserved."
U19 line-up:
41 Seimen – 5 Herwerth (88' Preuß), 8 Korkut © (84' Knezevic), 11 Boakye (65' Hajdini), 13 Spalt (46' Azevedo), 16 Lüers, 17 Migalic, 19 Tsigkas (88' Mule), 21 Agzikara, 24 Freßle, 26 Catovic
What happens next:
The UEFA Youth League quarter-finals will be played over 1 and 2 April. Nico Willig’s side will take on FC Barcelona, who saw off Aston Villa 3-1 in the round of 16.
