Harnik bags derby winning double
Thanks to a brace from Austrian international Martin Harnik, VfB Stuttgart ran out 2-1 winners of Friday evening’s Baden-Württemberg derby clash with SC Freiburg. After VfB had taken a two goal lead, the home side hit back through Papiss Demba Cisse but, in the end, Bruno Labbadia’s side hung on to seal their first away win of the 49th Bundesliga season.
VfB began the Baden-Württemberg derby with a starting eleven unchanged in comparison to the side which beat Hannover 96 3-0 last weekend. Right from the outset there was tempo and determination in the tie from both sides. The first chance of the game fell to Martin Harnik after a quarter hour of play, with the striker flashing a shot from an almost impossible angle across the face of the goal. In the 32nd minute, the Austrian international then went one better. From a corner, Serdar Tasci got a shot away, which was blocked and initially cleared, but only as far as Harnik, who rifled the ball low past fellow Austrian keeper to hand VfB a 1-0 lead to take into the break.

Solid at the back
Neither side was able to maintain the high tempo of the first half in the second period, but the gain remained exciting and intensive. The first sign of life came from SC, as Reisinger got his head to a Schuster free-kick, but Sven Ulreich was alert to the danger and tipped the ball over the bar. There was further danger in the 71st minute, as Schuster set-up a free-kick from 25 meters out, but the former Stuttgarter couldn’t keep his shot on target. Martin Harnik then added his second of the night as he took on a delivery from Cristian Molinaro at the back post and hammered the ball into the corner of the net to double the VfB advantage. The home side took some time to recover from the shock but, in the 84th minute, drew hope again. Cisse played a one-two with substitute Erik Jendrisek and burst past Khalid Boulahrouz to slot his shot between the legs of Ulreich and reduce the deficit – 1-2. VfB reacted with a Tamas Hajnal free-kick which found the head of Tasci, but the defenders header proved off target. The tension rose again in the closing minutes, with Cedrick Makiadi laying back to Jendrisek, who drove a shot just centimeters over the crossbar.
VfB goal-scorer Martin Harnik: "For me personally it was a good evening."
