VfB make impressive amends

The expectations of the VfB fans ahead of the clash with SC Freiburg were great, and in the end very satisfactorily fulfilled. Trainer Bruno Labbadia’s men beat the Bundesliga’s bottom side 4-1 to pull further away from the drop zone. The coach made two changes to the eleven that began in last weekend’s 2-4 defeat to Hannover, with Sedar Tasci and Zdravko Kuzmanovic returning in favour of Maza and Christan Gentner respectively.

The home side started a pacy Baden-Württemberg derby well and were in front with just twelve minutes played. A diagonal cross from Sakai was well dummied by Ibesevic, which left Harnik free to beat SC keeper Oliver Baumann to make it 1-0. VfB continued to push forward and just past the twenty minute mark, they doubled their lead. A long clearance from Ulreich was eventually squared across the face of the goal to find Shinji Okazaki sliding in at pace to convert at the back post – 2-0!

Freiburg slowly began to find a way back into the tie, including an Oliver Sorg effort which tested Ulreich. In the 27th minute, the visitors won a corner, which was again to prove VfB’s downfall as Fallou Diagné rose at the pack post to head home and make it 2-1 going into the break.

The width of the woodwork!

SC started the second period ferociously, with Jan Rosental getting on the end of a Makiadi delivery, only to be denied by the width of the woodwork. There were a number of chances then at either end, with Hajnal and Ibisevic going close for VfB and Ulreich saving from Makiadi, but then the home side were to find the net again. In the 63rd minute, Ibisevic rose to meet a Hajnal corner delivery and the header was then deflected into the top of the net off Boulahrouz’s back – 3-1. Minutes later, Ibisevic headed wide from point blank range. In the 69th minute, the home side could also have had a penalty, when Harnik effort struck the arm of Oliver Sorg, but the referee showed little interest in the appeals. With eight minutes to go though, the Austrian striker had more luck as he got on the end of a Hajnal pass to nab his second of the day and make the final score 4-1 for VfB.

VfB head-coach Bruno Labbadia: "We began today just as we had set out to do."
Stimmen zum Spiel

In the end it was a deserved win for Labbadia’s men, making up for the disappointing 2-4 defeat to Hannover 96 last Sunday. In the table, VfB move into eighth place but will have to repeat their performance from today again next week if they are to close in on the top third of the table.
