No joy in Munich

Beautiful sunshine, 30 degree temperatures and a capacity filled Allianz-Arena greeted VfB and FC Bayern Munich prior to the match on Saturday, but the picture wasn’t quite so sunny for VfB after the ninety minutes. The south German derby was to end in a 2-0 victory for the hosts from Bavaria.

Whilst VfB had almost their best eleven available – injured captain Serdar Tasci (knee ligament damage) and Julian Schieber were replaced by Maza and Shinji Okazaki – the visitors, having played an intensive 120 minutes on Wednesday and with two cup finals ahead – opted for a second string eleven. Eight of those involved in the semi-final win over Real Madrid in med-week were rested, with, for example, Jörg Butt filling in for Manuel Neuer and Rafiniha replacing FCB captain Philipp Lahm.

Early on, the clash between the south German rivals was evenly matched but the hosts soon took the initiative and created a number of openings. Sven Ulreich was called into action to deal with a shot from distance by Danijel Pranjic, which he did excellently, but minutes later the keeper was helpless to prevent Bayern taking the lead. Maza misjudged a long pass by Diego Contento, nodding the ball into the path of Thomas Müller, who, with only Ulle to beat, laid square instead to hand Mario Gomez his 26th goal of the season and give the home side a 1-0 advantage.

Conceding appeared to shake VfB into action and in the 35th minute, Hajnal sent Martin Harnik on his way, but under severe pressure from Holger Badstuber, the front man couldn’t hit the target. Seconds later, Hajnal put a cross into the box, where Okazaki could only head against the crossbar. With Ivica Olic unable to find a way past Ulle, the home side went in at the break clinging to their narrow 1-0 lead.

A dip in tempo

As active and determined as Bruno Labbadia’s men were at the end of the first period, the away side couldn’t get much going after the restart. At the other end, Bayern were more adventurous and created a number of chances to extend their advantage. In the 50th minute, Olic fed substitute David Alaba, who drilled wide from 16 meters out and twelve minutes later, Contento tested Ulreich from distance. There then followed a period during which neither side really looked to press and little happened at either end.

Striker Martin Harnik: "It was probably never so easy to take something from here than it was today but we just didn’t make use of our chances."

In the 66th minute, Ulle and Gotoku Sakai had to combine to stop Olic doubling the Bayern lead. In added time, with VfB pushing forward, Munich broke away, with four men closing in on Maza. Olic eventually played square to Müller, who slotted home to make the final score 2-0.

In the end, VfB crashed for the first time again after ten matches without defeat and with Leverkusen winning against Hannover 96, Labbadia’s men slip back into sixth place.
