Home win for Europe
It was just the sort of Friday evening that the fans at the Mercedes-Benz Arena had been hoping for. VfB completely dominated their home game against SV Werder Bremen and in the end deservedly won the tie 4-1. Just as in the games against Dortmund, Mainz and in Augsburg, Bruno Labbadia’s men initially fell behind but then hit back impressively.
A wonderful strike from Christian Gentner, Martin Harnik’s brace and a header from Substitute Cacau guided the home side to a clear win.
Slow start for Werder
The first error of the game was made by Bremen’s keeper Tim Wiese, as he failed to deal with a Tamas Hajnal corner but unfortunately Julian Schieber’s effort sailed over the crossbar. Around 25 minutes had been played when the visitors launched their second attack of the game. Molinaro slipped up on the half way line, which allowed Marko Marin to put in a cross from the right to find the unmarked Markus Rosenberg, who easily slotted home from point blank range to make it 1-0 for the visitors.
VfB hit back with Gentner stunner
The hosts quickly shook off the setback and pressed in search of an immediate response. Labbadia’s men were the better side and also had the experience of the past three games in knowing that goals could come from any position on the pitch – as was to be the case once again! In stumbling, Molinaro poked the ball through to Christian Gentner, who wonderfully curled the ball into the top corner of the net from 18 meters out to make it 1-1. With the crowd in the Mercedes-Benz Arena now roaring their side on, the hosts wanted their noses in front before the break and got their goal before the half time whistle. Georg Niedermeier rose to head a Hajnal corner goal-wards. Tim Wiese could only punch the ball forwards and Martin Harnik pounced the force the ball over the line and give VfB a 2-1 lead to take into the break.

VfB remain in charge
The second half began much as the first had ended, with VfB controlling proceeding and Werder merely watching on. Schieber put a shot just wide of the target in the 51st minute but Harnik went one better just two minutes later. Another Hajnal corner caused chaos in the Werder defence and the ball fell to Harnik, who drove the ball into the top of the net from close range to make it 3-1.
Brace scorer Martin Harnik: "We played very well here tonight and once again displayed exactly the right reaction to going behind."

In the closing minutes of the game, VfB looked to increase their already impressive goal-difference. Firstly Ibisevic tested Wiese with a free-kick from distance but it was again a corner, this time delivered with pace from Go Sakai, that found substitute Cacau, who headed home to make the final score 4-1. The clear and highly deserved success against SV Werder Bremen sees VfB solidify their status as fifth in the table, leaving the north German side seven points behind them and closing the gap to fourth placed Gladbach down to four points.
