Der erste Saisonsieg ist geschafft
Finally! VfB Stuttgart notched up their first win of the season with a 2-0 (1-0) away to 1. FC Nürnberg. In a game with more intensity that quality, the visitors made effective use of the few chances that were created to earn a vitally important win.
Trainer Bruno Labbadia brought in Raphael Holzhauser to make his starting eleven debut, with Martin Harnik returning from suspension and Ibrahima Traoré coming in to add some pace to the attack.
The 4,000 travelling VfB fans were on their feet and celebrating their side’s opener with just 24 second on the clock. Vedad Ibisevic pounced on a poorly weighted back-pass and slotted past the on-rushing keeper to make it 1-0. The fastest goal of the season so far! A mere seven minutes later, the ball was then nestling in the VfB net but the referee spotted an offside and stopped the Nuremberg celebrations in their tracks.
The tie remained intense as the half wore on but chances on goal were few and far between. With just over a half hour played, Sven Ulreich was called upon to make a save from Almog Cohen. Shortly before the end of the half, Tomas Pekhart had a half chance to level from a header but was unable to make sufficient contact and VfB took their narrow advantage into the break.

Serdar Tasci was unable to remerge for the second period following a collision with Javier Pinola and the captain was replaced by Maza. The away side had the first opening of the half through Raphael Holzhauser, whose shot from 25 meters out was blocked by Raphael Schäfer. At the other end, on the hour mark, Sven Ulreich got an arm out to turn a free-kick by Hiroshi Kiyotake over the bar.

In the 74th minute, Schäfer was busy again, stopping a volleyed effort from Cacau, but a minute later, the ‘Club’ keeper could do nothing to prevent Martin Harnik making it 2-0 with a well placed drive from the edge of the box. In the remaining minutes, there were some half chances at either end, but neither keeper was truly tested and VfB secured their first win of the season.
