Derby defeat
Freiburg were the more committed on Sunday afternoon, had more of the luck on their side and finished with a hard earned 3-0 win over VfB.
In front of a 24,000 strong crowd at the ‘Mage Solar Stadium’ – including some 1,900 VfB supporters – Bruno Labbadia chose not to make any alterations to his starting eleven.
Chances on goal a rarity
In the first ten minutes of the game, there was little action in either penalty area, with both sides looking to take a grip on the game but neither managing to cause any problems for either keeper.
VfB’s first threatening break forward saw a counter attack conducted down the right flank. The delivery from Martin Harnik was not precise enough though and goalkeeper Oliver Baumann had no problems plucking the ball out of the danger zone (14’).
Seven minutes later, the game was all over bar the whistle. A long ball forward from SC keeper Oliver Baumann, was nodded on from Daniel Caligiuri to Max Kruse, who slotted home to make it 3-0. Bruno Labbadia looked to boost his sides hopes with two changes, as Raphael Holzhauser and Tamas Hajnal replaced Martin Harnik and Christian Gentner, but there was to be no way back and SC Freiburg took all three derby points with a 3-0 success.
VfB vice-captain Christian Gentner: "Today we may have just been a little slower than Freiburg psychologically." Post match comments
In the 17th minute, Sven Ulreich stopped Freiburg’s first chance through Pavel Krmas and then made a further strong save from a Julian Schuster shot just two minutes later. With the home side looking ever more in control, they then suddenly found their own goal frame rattling. Profiting from some good interplay between Gentner and Ibisevic, Zdravko Kuzmanovic let a shot fly from 20 meters out and struck the SC upright (20’).
Freiburg takes the lead
With the next attack, the home side then went one better. Jan Rosenthal fired in a low drive from the edge of the box, which squirmed between the legs of William Kvist and past Sven Ulreich to make it 1-0 for the hosts (22).
In the 40th minute, William Kvist sprayed the play wide to the left, where Cristian Molinaro went powering forward. The Italian put in a cross for Christian Gentner to meet, but the midfielder was unable to guide his header on goal. At the other end, Jonathan Schmid drove a 43rd minute free-kick over the bar and the home side took their narrow 1-0 advantage into the break.
Decision within seven minutes
VfB came out for the second half with all guns firing in search of an equaliser but Freiburg always looked dangerous and then increased their lead to 2-0 in the 67th minute. Retaking a free-kick, which the referee had initially blown-up, the first effort was wasted but at the second time of asking, Pavel Krmas poked home the loose ball t make it 2-0.
