Shinji Okazaki misses out
The first real shot on goal fell to Franck Ribéry in the eleventh minute, but the French winger’s effort was cleared for a corner by William Kvist. The resulting set-piece saw Dante rise to connect with a header but couldn’t keep his effort on target (10’). In the 27th minute, a loud groan rang around the Mercedes-Benz Arena. Vedad Ibisevic nodded the ball into the path of Shinji Okazaki but the Japanese international’s shot from 20 meters out went narrowly wide of the post.
Harnik hits the post
Minutes later, the 54,000 home fans were on their feet again, sure their side were destined to take the lead but Martin Harnik’s header, following a delivery from Cristian Molinaro, stuck the post and was then smothered by the Bayern keeper and the two sides went into the break with the score-line still at 0-0.
Mario Mandzukic puts the guests in front
The second period began with a back-pass from Cristian Molinaro, which was pounced on by Mario Mandzukic, who duly rounded Sven Ulreich and slotted home make it 1-0 for Bayern (50’). In the 72nd minute, the Croatian striker took possession again on the right wing and fired a pass across the face of the goal, where Thomas Müller was perfectly placed to double the league leader’s lead. At the other end, Manual Neuer reacted quickly to cut out a Christian Gentner delivery, with Vedad Ibisevic poised to shoot.
VfB full-back Cristian Molinaro: "The team worked really fantastically well. We didn’t allow Bayern to create many openings but then my mistake proved decisive." Post match comments
Marching orders for Harnik
The next two efforts on goal fell to Tunay Torun (77’ and 79’) but neither shot was to threaten the Bayern keeper. With ten minutes to go, Martin Harnik saw a second yellow card and was subsequently dismissed. The final effort on goal in the match was an attempted chip by Mandzukic, which Sven Ulreich managed to block.
The remainder of the match passed without incident and at the end of the south German derby, VfB’s best efforts could prevent the 0-2 defeat.
