Wolfsburg prove effective

It wasn’t the desired start for VfB in their first competitive game of 2013 as they slipped to a 0-2 (0-0) defeat away to VfL Wolfsburg. Bruno Labbadia’s men did manage to create a number of openings but were unable to find the target. The side from Lower Saxony were ultimately more effective.

Right from the outset, VfL Wolfsburg made it clear that they were eager to get their new coach Dieter Hecking off to a successful start as they pushed VfB early on. Bruno Labbadia’s men held their own though, often putting VfL under pressure with pacy counter attacks. With just twelve minutes played, VfB had the first real sight of goal in the game. Ibrahima Traoré swerved his way through a number of VfL opponents – with admittedly as much fortune as skill – and managed to get a shot away with his weaker right foot. Unfortunately the effort proved off target.

Wolfsburg raise the pressure

As the half progressed, VfL Wolfsburg became ever stronger but before the break, it was Christian Gentner who twice found himself in the middle of the action. Firstly, the midfielder fired wide of the left upright (42’) and then, just a minute later, Diego Benaglio was forced to go full stretch to stop a curled effort from the VfB deputy captain (43’). The save from the ‘Wolves’ keeper was the final incident in the first period.

After the re-start, VfB again had the first chance on goal. A long ball forward from Sven Ulreich was nodded on by Martin Harnik into the path of Shinji Okazaki, but the Japanese striker was unable to hit the mark (47’).

Minutes later Diego then broke the deadlock, taking possession on the half-way line and dribbling his way forward before unleashing a shot which eluded Ulreich and landed in the bottom corner of the net – 1-0 (51’). VfB quickly dealt with the setback and went in immediate search of an equaliser.

VfB head-coach Bruno Labbadia: "That was a decent away performance from us except for the fact that we couldn’t get a goal." Post match comments

VfB pile on the pressure, VfL find the net

Six minutes after the opener, VfB launched a number of attacks on the Green-Whites goal in quick succession, with both Antonio Rüdiger and Tamas Hajnal having shots blocked before Cristian Molinaro brought yet another good save from Benaglio.

VfB pressed the home side back into their own penalty area but the visitors efforts were either off target or shut down by the VfL defence. During VfB’s period of pressure, Wolfsburg then broke away, winning a free-kick on the edge of the Stuttgart box which Diego delivered and Alexander Madlung headed home to make it 2-0 (67’).

VfB continued to search for a way back into the game but the efforts of Shinji Okazaki (87’), Martin Harnik (89’) and Raphael Holzhauser (90’) all missed the target and Bruno Labbadia’s men returned to Stuttgart empty handed.
