Vedad Ibisevic scores against Freiburg.

Third win in a week

At the end of a week with three home games and a total of over 163,000 in the Mercedes-Benz Arena, VfB thanked their fans with yet another win. The next derby success over SC Freiburg was sealed thanks to goals from Christian Gentner and Vedad Ibisevic.

Bruno Labbadia started with the same eleven that began in the cup on Wednesday. Contrary to the midweek game, this time SC had the first chance of the match but, with just three minutes on the clock, the VfB defence cleared the danger.

The Bundesliga clash between the two was somewhat less hectic than Wednesday’s cup-tie had been but as the half progressed, the home side began to take charge and had their first sight of goal through Alexandru Maxim, who tried his luck from 30 meters out (11’).

Gentner opens the scoring

The Romanian midfielder was involved again just minutes later, creating the next opening for the hosts, but on this occasion, neither Vedad Ibisevic nor vice-captain Christian Gentner could make the chance count (14).

Freiburg began to get more of a grip on the game towards the end of the half the real efforts on goal were to fall at the other end, but only the final pass was to let VfB down (29’ and 30’). With 33 minutes played though, Bruno Labbadia’s men were to reward themselves for their efforts, as Martin Harnik won possession, turned and delivered a perfect cross for Christian Gentner to steal in and head VfB into a 1-0 lead.

Ibisevic doubles for VfB

In the 42nd minute, Martin Harnik again won the ball and this time fed Vedad Ibisevic, who left Oliver Baumann in the SC goal no chance and increased the home sides lead to 2-0 going into the break.

Woodwork denies Traoré

In the 78th minute, Cristian Molinaro broke on the left, playing through Ibisevic and then Alexandru Maxim, before the ball found its way to birthday boy Ibrahima Traoré, who was unable to cap his special day with a goal.

With ten minutes to go, the crowd rose to their feet to applaud Vedad Ibisevic, who made way for Federico Macheda and two minutes later, Tamas Hajnal replaced Maxim (82’). On his arrival, the Italian striker had an effort on goal, which he was unable to make count (84’).

The crowd were on their feet again minutes later, as Traoré broke free and got a shot in, but the Guinean internationals initial effort bounced away off the inside of the post and his attempt from the rebound found only the outer netting. In the closing minutes, the 25 year old bowed out and was replaced by Shinji Okazaki (88’).

With the game all but over, Ivan Santini pulled a goal back for the visitors to make it 2-1 and, right at the death, Sven Ulreich was forced to make a vitally important save and clinch the third win in a week at the Mercedes-Benz Arena for VfB.
