No surprises in Rome

After just eight minutes of play, the game in Rome was all but decided, with VfB trailing by 0-2. Bruno Labbadia’s men displayed some moral though and in the end were beaten 1-3 (0-2) and subsequently were eliminated from the UEFA Europa League.

The first real chance of the game fell to Raphael Holzhauser, who let fly from 20 meters out after just four minutes and forced Lazio keeper Federico Marchetti to go full stretch. The next 240 seconds were then to prove imminently decisive.

Brace for Libor Kozak

A double whammy from Lazio’s Libor Kozak (6’ and 8’) basically sealed the visitor’s fortune, but the side from Stuttgart refused to simply throw in the towel and went close through first Vedad Ibisevic and then Shinji Okazaki.

VfB then had the first chance of the second period, with Ibisevic breaking through on the left and feeding a pass through to Gotoku Sakai, but the Japanese international’s effort was parried by the Rome keeper and the danger was ultimately cleared.

Tamas Hajnal reduces the deficit

An effort from Tamas Hajnal on the hour mark was also to prove unfruitful, but the Hungarian international then went one better just two minutes later and reduced the VfB deficit – 1-2 (62’).

VfB head-coach Bruno Labbadia: "When you go two goals behind so early on, then the whole concept is destroyed." Post match comments

VfB continued to press forward, driven on by substitute Martin Harnik, who was brought in to replace Hajnal in the 74th minute. The Austrian had a headed effort from a Cristian Molinaro delivery but was unable to find the target (79’). There was a similar faith for Georg Niedermeier in the 85th minute, when his header failed to find the mark.

Ederson missed out in the 86th minute but Libor Kozak was on the mark to increase the Lazio advantage to 3-1, which was also to prove the final score. There was to be no major surprises in Rome and VfB bowed out of the Europa League for this season.
