VfB show strength
The play then began to swing back and forth in front of the 75,420 strong crowd as the game developed into fantastic game. From an Alexandru Maxim delivery, Vedad Ibisevic nodded the ball on to Martin Harnik who immediately fired on goal and Bayern keeper Manuel Neuer could only parry. Georg Niedermeier pounced to turn the ball back goal-wards but the keeper had made it to his feet quickly and scampered across his goal to hook the ball away off the line.
What a final it turned out to be! In an electrifying, nerve-wracking and memorable game, VfB Stuttgart narrowly lost 2-3 to FC Bayern Munich. Coming back from 0-3 down, Martin Harnik scored a brace to reduce the deficit but for all their efforts, there was to be no reward for Bruno Labbadia’s men.
The game got off to a bright start, with Sven Ulreich clearing from Arjen Robben, only to see the ball roll mere centimeters wide of the post. As was to be expected, FC Bayern began to take charge of proceedings and had the bulk of the possession, but the next true attempt on goal was from VfB. Combining to break forward, Ibrahima Traoré swung in a cross, which Alexandru Maxim met with a spectacular first-time volley, but unfortunately the Romanian’s effort flew agonizingly wide of the upright (9’).
Flattering Bayern advantage
With the half wearing on, the German all-time record championship winners began to press, resulting in two questionable incidents in the VfB area – one of which leading to a Bayern penalty, which Thomas Müller tucked away to gift Bayern a 1-0 lead going into the break.
The second half of the game got underway with another chance for last weekend’s Champions League winners and VfB suddenly found themselves two goals down as Mario Gomez turned a Lahm delivery home. The game slightly lost its way for a brief period, until the 61st minute, when Mario Gomez pounced again to increase the Bayern advantage to 3-0.

Harnik brace and Cacau comeback
Shinji Okazaki and Gotoku Sakai were introduced to replace Alexandru Maxim and Cristian Molinaro respectively. The Japanese full-back had an almost immediate effect as he drove a cross deep to the back post, finding Martin Harnik who reduced the deficit with an excellently executed header – 1-3 (71’). When the Austrian international then struck again in the 80th minute, to make it 2-3, the tension rose dramatically and the match was flung wide open.
Final push
The Bavarians began to falter as VfB pushed in search of an equaliser. The final real chance on goal in the 2012/2013 DFB-Cup final fell to the VfB captain. Serdar Tasci rose to head goal-wards from a free-kick delivery but Manuel Neuer reacted quickly and smothered the ball to secure the first ever treble success in German football history for FC Bayern Munich. VfB’s performance will remain long in the memory though for the determination and will displayed in a very closely run cup final.
