"VfB are back"
Sunday was a true day of celebration for VfB. At the end of an exceptional performance and an extremely effective display, the lads from Cannstatt sent TSG Hoffenheim packing with a 6-2 success. Thomas Schneider made four changes to the side that began last Thursday evening, with Martin Harnik, Cacau and Benedikt Röcker on the bench, whilst Ibrahima Traoré was out of the reckoning through suspension. Their places in the starting eleven were filled by Gotoku Sakai, Moritz Leitner, Alexandru Maxim and Timo Werner, who made his Bundesliga debut. Daniel Schwaab made his 100th appearance in Germany’s top flight.
Serdar Tasci, who is on his way out of Stuttgart, was honoured shortly before kick-off for his long years of service to VfB and the former club captain had a few words for the fans in bidding farewell. The next eruption of applause took place after the kick-off. With ten minutes on the clock, Moritz Leitner fired in a shot which took a deflection and narrowly missed the target.
Rüdiger, Ibisevic, Volland, Maxim – 3-1 for VfB at the break
On 12 minutes, the hosts then took the lead. Alexandru Maxim played a firm pass to the middle, where Antonio Rüdiger was perfectly placed to score his first Bundesliga goal. In the 19th minute, VfB then doubled their lead when Vedad Ibisevic rose in the box to powerfully head home an Alexandru Maxim corner delivery.
There was plenty on offer for the 42,500 in the Mercedes-Benz Arena, with TSG battling hard and eventually pulling a goal back when a Kevin Volland shot was deflected past Ulreich. Thomas Schneider’s side had the immediate answer, with Timo Werner playing an excellent pass to Alexandru Maxim, who made it 3-1 going into the break.
Thomas Schneider: "I am just very happy that we won the game."
