Ibisevic on the double
VfB Stuttgart began this season’s ‘Road to Berlin’ campaign in the same city where last season’s cup dreams ended. Away to ‘Oberliga’ (5th division) club BFC Dynamo, the Bundesliga side were forced to work hard against the determined amateurs but were to eventually book their place in the next round of the competition thanks to a Vedad Ibisevic brace.
VfB coach Bruno Labbadia was forced to make a number of changes to the side which began in Bulgaria in mid-week, with the introductions of Gotoku Sakai, Georg Niedermeier, Christian Gentner, Cacau and Alexandru Maxim into his starting eleven.
In front of a crowd of almost 10,000 at the ‘Friedrich-Ludwig-Jahn-Stadium’ in Berlin, the visitors took charge of proceedings from the outset but, facing a committed opponent with nothing to lose, VfB were to find themselves having to maintain patience and even work at the back themselves, with first Moritz Leitner (20’) and then the post (31’) coming to VfB’s rescue. It was to take until the 40th minute, but then Labbadia’s men finally made a telling impact. Cacau and Traoré combined to find Maxim, who crossed perfectly to the centre, where Vedad Ibisevic rose to head VfB into a 1-0 lead, which they would take into the break.

Ibisevic scores
After the re-start it was again barely recognizable that some four divisions divide the two sides, with Dynamo making life extremely difficult for the Bundesliga club but, as the half wore on, the quality within the Stuttgart team became ever more noticeable. Christian Gentner was the next to get sight of the Berlin goal, meeting a cross from Cacau but failing to hit the target. At the other end, Patrick Brendel forced a good save from Ulreich but BFC attacks were becoming a rarity.
In the 75th minute, substitute Martin Harnik powered past Phulipp Haastrup, who had no choice but to fell the attacker. Vedad Ibisevic stepped up to take the resulting penalty and converted confidently to increase VfB’s advantage to 2-0 (76’). The hosts had little more to offer and VfB saw out the remainder of the tie to ensure they would take a step further towards repeating last season’s trip to Berlin for the DFB-Cup final – although to repeat that feat, major improvements will be necessary.
