Spectacle in Hamburg
VfB had the lead three times away to Hamburger SV but came away from the north of Germany with just one point in the end. Antonio Rüdiger also saw red during the 3-3 draw on the banks of the Elbe.
Trainer Thomas Schneider sent out the same eleven that began before the international break against Werder Bremen – and VfB got away to a perfect start. Alexandru Maxim and Vedad Ibisevic combined for the Romanian international to slot home and put the visitors in front with just three minutes on the clock.
The hosts reacted with a great deal of pressure but could initially find no way through a well drilled Stuttgart defence. Just as the visitors were looking to have weathered the storm and get more of a grip on proceedings, a loose ball fell to Pierre-Michel Lasogga, who fired home from inside the penalty area to make it 1-1 (22’).
With half-time approaching, VfB began to take charge again and punished the home side for lacklustre defending, when Maxim fired in a free-kick delivery for Christian Gentner to flick past Adler with a deft header and put his side back in the driving seat (37’). Having battled hard throughout the half, Thomas Schneider’s side took a well deserved 2-1 lead into the break.
Vedad Ibisevic: "It is frustrating that we didn’t win the game." Post comment
Three goals in eleven minutes
The second half began much as the first had finished, VfB continued to press and cause the hosts problems but Stuttgart were caught napping in the 55th minute and Maximilian Beister stole in to level the scores from close range.
VfB had the perfect answer though and were back in front just nine minutes later, when Daniel Schwaab combined with Ibrahima Traoré, who passed square for Vedad Ibisevic in the box. The striker was posed to fire home but Johan Djourou got in ahead of the Bosnian to turn the ball into his own net – 3-2 (64’).
Unfortunately for the 2,000 VfB fans amongst the 53,000 in Hamburg, the joy over the renewed lead was short lived, as just two minutes further on, Rafael van der Vaart levelled for HSV once again.
To add to their disappointment at losing the lead three times, VfB were left with ten men for the last five minutes after Antonio Rüdiger was red-carded. There was no change to the score though and VfB headed back south with one point from a spectacular 3-3 draw.
