SV Werder Bremen
1-1 | Petersen | (37. Min) |
Martin Harnik put VfB in front against Bremen.
So much more possible!
It just wasn’t to be for VfB on the day! The home side dominated the clash with Werder Bremen but were unable to capitalize with an all important second goal and thus, the eighth match day of the season ended for VfB with a share of the spoils from a 1-1 draw.
Trainer Thomas Schneider made just one change to his starting eleven from the game in Braunschweig, with Martin Harnik getting the nod ahead of Timo Werner, who was on the bench. The new man was to prove effective as early as the eighth minute, making it 1-0 for VfB as he stole in at the back post to slot home a knock-on from a corner.
VfB consistently active in attack
Bremen were far from being completely dormant, but VfB continued to dominate the proceedings. Schneider’s men impressed with a committed effort and shifted the play quickly into attack once they had taken possession. Alone the tally of 4:0 corners by the half hour mark spoke volumes about the dominance of the side coached by Thomas Schneider, Alfons Higl and Tomislav Maric.

In spite of all their superiority though, VfB were to find themselves back on level terms with Bremen in the 37th minute. Zlatko Junuzovic played through to Nils Petersen and the striker made no mistakes in slotting home to level the scores at 1-1 going into the half-time break.
Thomas Schneider: "I am very satisfied with my team’s performance."

VfB in charge
After the re-start, VfB again took control of the activities on the pitch and forced Bremen deep into their own half, but the 50,500 strong crowd at Mercedes-Benz Arena were left waiting before they saw their side create anything of real danger. Alexandru Maxim let fly from 20 meters out but Sebastian Mielitz was equal to the dipping shot (58’). A minute later, Martin Harnik tried his luck from distance, but the Austrian international was to have no joy on this occasion.
A further combined effort between William Kvist and Alexandru Maxim set Ibrahima Traoré on his way, the the pacy winger had his attempt blocked away (76‘). The fans gave their all, as VfB closed in on the Werder goal, but the visitors again and again managed challenges and blocks to hang on for the ninety minutes and earn themselves a 1-1 draw against a superior VfB Stuttgart side.
