VfB make DFB-Cup exit
In the second round of the DFB-Cup, VfB slipped to a 1-2 defeat at the hands of SC Freiburg, having failed to make use of a number of good chances. Vedad Ibisevic’s goal was to prove too little, too late.
As he had previously announced, trainer Thomas Schneider introduced some rotation to his starting eleven. Thorsten Kirschbaum replaced the injured Sven Ulreich between the posts, whilst Konstantin Rausch, Ibrahima Traoré and Mohammed got the nod ahead of Abdellaoue Arthur Boka, Timo Werner and Alexandru Maxim. With the new men in the side, there was also a switch made to a 4-4-2 set-up.
VfB make the running
With both sides battling hard for possession, the finer points of the game left much to be desired. On the whole, it was a typical derby game – and a knock-out match to boot! In the 18th minute, VfB were caught napping from a free-kick, which found its way to Mike Hanke, who squared for Admir Mehmedi, but luckily Thorsten Kirschbaum was alert and dealt with the danger.
VfB were the controlling side but another lapse in the defence allowed Hanke through to get a shot away but luckily Daniel Schwaab was wide awake and cleared. Whilst VfB stood strong at the back, there were a couple of shouts for a penalty at the other end (33’ hand ball and 45’ foul), but the referee was unimpressed and the game went into the break at 0-0.

Too little, too late
SC had the first chance of the second half, with Hanke having far too much time to place a header but again Thorsten Kirschbaum stood his ground and palmed the effort away for a corner (51’). From the resulting set-piece, the VfB keeper was left without a chance though, as Matthias Ginter headed Freiburg into the lead (52‘). VfB reacted with an aggressive attack through Ibrahima Traoré. Oliver Baumann could only parry the initial shot, but Vedad Ibisevic could only turn the rebound over the bar (55‘).

Just four minutes later, the SC keeper was forced to make a strong save from Vedad Ibisevic. The resulting free ball fell to Mohammed Abdellaoue, who was unable to make a significant connection and another chance went a begging (59‘). In the 61st minute, Timo Werner replaced the Norwegian international, as VfB continued to push and dominated, but a way back into the tie eluded Schneider’s men.
That was not to prove the same situation for Freiburg. Since taking the lead, the hosts had failed to really threaten, but the next chance that fell to Mike Hanke was to land in the back of the Stuttgart net (70’). Five minutes later, Alexandru Maxim replaced Martin Harnik and shortly after, Ibrahima Traoré again tested the Freiburg keeper. Cacau’s introduction, in place of Kvist, was to lead to an immediate chance for the striker but again Oliver Baumann was to frustrate VfB. In the 86th minute, VfB were to finally make a breakthrough, thanks to an Ibisevic header, but the goal to make it 1-2 was to come too late for VfB, who failed to make their chances count earlier in the match and were to be sent tumbling out of the competition as a consequence.
