VfB fail to reap rewards
The chance to secure a third successive win was undoubtedly there, but with a last second penalty missing the target, VfB’s home game against Eintracht Frankfurt ended in a 1-1 draw. Timo Werner opened his Bundesliga account with Stuttgart’s equaliser.
Timo Werner scores first Bundesliga goal
The game against Eintracht Frankfurt began with a stunning fan choreography display to celebrate VfB’s 120th anniversary. On the pitch, Martin Harnik moved into the starting eleven in place of the injured Moritz Leitner, but it was the visitors from Hessen who made the brighter start once the whistle blew. VfB had difficulties early on and promptly found themselves 0-1 down. From a corner, Marco Russ fired a shot unstoppably past Sven Ulreich into the top corner (14’). Martin Harnik answered with an angry sprint into the Frankfurt box, but the Austrian international’s shot was finger-tipped away for a corner by Kevin Trapp (15‘).
Vedad Ibisevic: "It’s a real shame that I didn’t score." Post match comments
Alexandru Maxim delivered the resulting set-piece, which was nodded on by Christian Gentner to find Timo Werner steaming in at the back post to head home and level at 1-1 (16‘). It was the 17 year olds first Bundesliga goal – making him the youngest goal-scorer in VfB’s Bundesliga history. The goal clearly boosted the hosts, who looked up for the points in front of a crowd of 45,000 at the Mercedes-Benz Arena but, with few clear chances arising, the sides went in at the break locked at 1-1.
Ulreich prevents the damage
Early in the second half, Sven Ulreich made a good stop from a Stefan Aigner header (48‘) whilst, at the other end, Martin Harnik fired a shot into the side netting (52‘). Just a minute later, Ulreich was called into action again, flinging himself into the path of a squared pass to prevent Vaclav Kadlec from having a clear shot on goal (53‘).
VfB make strong finish and win a penalty – but fail to take all three points
In the 69th minute, Timo Werner left the field of play to rousing applause and was replaced by winger Ibrahima Traoré. The crowd were on their feet and cheering again as Sven Ulreich impressively got a hand out to turn a powerful shot by Frankfurt’s Constant Djakpa away for a corner (70’). The resulting set-piece was fired well over the target by Marco Russ (71’).
In the 72nd minute, Konstantin Rausch replaced Arthur Boka, and the full-back had a quick impact, setting up Alexandru Maxim for a low drive which narrowly missed the target. A similar fate befell Vedad Ibisevic (83.), who dribbled through the Frankfurt area but failed to get a decent shot away. VfB were pushing hard for a winner in the closing phase and the Bosnian striker had a further opportunity with a flashed shot on the turn, which unfortunately only found the side netting.
Cacau came in for Alexandru Maxim (90‘) and seconds later, Ibrahima Traoré was brought down in the box, earning VfB a deserved penalty. On the day though, there was only to be one point in it for VfB, with Vedad Ibisevic firing the spot-kick wide leaving the game to end in a 1-1 draw.
