Defeat to Augsburg
VfB started the clash with FC Augsburg determinedly and created a number of chances going forward, but were ultimately unable to make their chances count. The guests, on the other hand, proved decidedly more effective and in the end sealed a 4-1 (2-0) away win.
VfB trainer Thomas Schneider made just one change to the side that began against Bayer 04 Leverkusen, with Martin Harnik making way for Alexandru Maxim in the starting eleven. The Romanian took up a central position, whilst Mohammed Abdellaoue moved out of the striker’s role out to the right side of midfield.
The Norwegian international had a major part to play in VfB’s first attack. With just two minutes played, the attacker got his heel to an imprecise cross and sent the ball looping goal-wards, only narrowly missing the FCA goal. Just three minutes further on, Mohammed Abdellaoue was involved again, this time firing in a shot from eleven meters out, which was deflected wide of Alexander Manninger’s goal.
In the eleventh minute, the Norwegian had another go, this time with a close range header, but again the end product was identical to his two previous efforts. The lack of a goal was the only negative element in VfB’s game to that point of the match, as Schneider’s men pushed their opponents back high up the pitch and forced Augsburg into making errors – one of which led to Daniel Schwab getting in a header from a Alexandru Maxim cross, but was unable to guide the effort on goal (25’).
Quote for the game
Thomas Schneider: "I am very disappointed by my team."

Robin Yalcin makes Bundesliga debut
FC Augsburg took until the 35th minute to create their first real chance on goal, but then made the opportunity count. A deflected Matthias Ostrzolek shot fell kindly for Tobias Werner. The winger passed to Arkadiusz Milik, who made no mistake and slotted home to put FCA in front. The guests from Augsburg then proved stunningly effective with the second chance of the game, with André Hahn slamming home to make it 2-0 for the away side at the break.
VfB came out after the break fired up and determined, with Rani Khedira getting in the first shot of the half (50‘). To add to the woes of trailing by two goals at home, in the 53rd minute there was then a further setback for the hosts, when referee Jochen Drees issuing a red card to Vedad Ibisevic in questionable circumstances. With the numerical advantage, Augsburg quickly found more space to operate in and André Hahn struck once again, to make it 3-0 for FCA (57’).
In spite of the score-line and playing with a man down, VfB refused to throw in the towel and managed to reduce the deficit through Konstantin Rausch in the 61st minute – 1-3. Almost directly from the re-start though, the visitors hit once again on a quick counter attack, finished off by Tobias Werner who made it 1-4 (64’). Thomas Schneider brought in Cacau and soon after Bundesliga debutant Robin Yalcin, but there was to be no way back for the home side, as the final score disappointingly remained 1-4.
