Daniel Didavi scores twice

Hard earned point in Dortmund

VfB picked up their second away point of the season on Wednesday evening, with the game away to Borussia Dortmund ending in a 2-2 (0-0) draw. For a while, it looked as though the ‘Cannstatt Boys’ may snatch all three points, thanks to two goals from Daniel Didavi, but the home side hit back late on to rescue a share of the spoils.

Armin Veh made just one change to his starting eleven compared to the side that began in the home game against TSG Hoffenheim at the weekend, with Carlos Gruezo getting the nod ahead of Martin Harnik. VfB created a number of promising openings in the first half, but there was to be no joy for Christian Gentner, Timo Werner or Carlos Gruezo.

Effective use of chances puts VfB in the driving seat

With just over a half-hour on the clock, BVB had the best chance to take the lead, but the returning Shinji Kagawa’s excellently executed lob grazed the crossbar and bounced out of play (32’). Shortly before the break, Moritz Leitner tested Roman Weidenfeller with a direct free-kick, but the Dortmund keeper was equal to the effort and the game in front of a crowd of 79,500 – including 3,000 travelling VfB fans – went into the break locked in stalemate.

The lack of goals wasn’t to last long after the restart. From a short-played corner by Moritz Leitner, the Yellow-Blacks, failed to clear their lines and Christian Gentner squared a pass from the right into the path of Daniel Didavi, who didn’t need to be asked twice to slot home from ten meters out – 1-0 (48‘). Having taken the lead, VfB stuck to their tactical plan, holding the hosts at bay and displaying a much improved attacking performance. In the 68th minute, the Stuttgart efficiency was rewarded with a second Daniel Didavi goal. The 24 year old converted from ten meters out following some good work by Timo Werner.

VfB’s two-goal advantage was to prove short-lived though. Just five minutes later, BVB pounced on a loss of possession by the guests going forward and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang reduced the deficit – 1-2 (73‘). As the closing phase of the game approached, the home side upped the pressure and they were eventually rewarded for their determination in the 86th, with Ciro Immobile netting to make it 2-2. Shortly beforehand, VfB had had an opportunity to make it 3-1 and in added time, Antonio Rüdiger cleared a shot from Lukas Piszczek off the line, to secure a valuable and well-deserved point for his side.
