Dida scores the equalizer against Paderborn!

Top-flight survival!

The waiting is over! Thanks to a 2-1 win on the final match day of the season away to SC Paderborn, VfB guaranteed they would be playing in the Bundesliga again in the coming campaign. Daniel Didavi and Daniel Ginczek turned the all-important clash with SCP.

Huub Stevens began with the same eleven from last weekend’s home win over HSV, but once again the Cannstatt Boys found themselves going a goal behind. With just four minutes played, SCP took the lead through Marc Vucinovic, with what was the hosts first shot on goal. VfB reacted immediately, putting the hosts under pressure and having chances to level through Martin Harnik (13’) and Daniel Didavi (15’), but without finding a telling answer.

Didavi and Ginczek turn the tie

Stevens‘ men controlled the match, but were initially unable to make their superiority count. A shot from Daniel Ginczek just shy of the half-hour mark failed to find the target, but shortly afterwards, the Cannstatt Boys were back on level terms. An attempt to cut out a cross from the left fell perfectly for Daniel Didavi, who fired home powerfully to make it 1-1 (36‘). Just two minutes later, Martin Harnik had a chance to put his side in front and on the stroke of half-time, Daniel Ginczek dribbled past three Paderborn defenders but then poked his subsequent shot wide of the far post. The side went into the break locked at 1-1, but VfB had shown fantastic moral to bounce back having conceded so early in the game.

Sven Ulreich: "Tonnes of dead-weight have fallen from us now. A brutally difficult year is over now. It’s a wonderful feeling to be able to celebrate with the fans now. We remain in the top-flight, which is where this club belongs. We pulled together successfully."

After the re-start, Stuttgart controlled the tie and created chances for themselves, with the best falling to Christian Gentner, who dragged his shot wide of the target (58'). On the hour-mark, VfB then had some luck on their side, when Moritz Stoppelkamp only narrowly failed to make a connection with a dangerous delivery. There were opportunities at either end, with Filip Kostic going closest, as his effort was agonisingly deflected around the post (71'). Just a minute later though, the VfB fateful were off their seats and celebrating. Substitute Alexandru Maxim sent Daniel Ginczek through, to fire home confidently and put his side in front (72'). VfB needed only to hang on to their advantage and did so convincingly, to take all three points and ensure they would be playing top-flight football in the Bundesliga again next season.
