Alexandru Maxim celebrates his goal to make it 3-1.

The ban is broken

On the sixth match day of the season, the ban was finally broken! Trainer Alexander Zorniger’s men earned themselves a deserved 3-1 win away to Hannover 96. Having gone behind in the first quarter hour, Christian Gentner & Co. bounced back quickly, scoring two goals within two minutes to turn the tie in their favour. In the closing phase, Alexandru Maxim was then on target to definitively decide the destination of the points.

Personnel

Alexander Zorniger made just one change to the eleven that started against FC Schalke 04 on Sunday, with Daniel Didavi getting the nod ahead of Alexandru Maxim from the outset.

Hannover 96 coach Michael Frontzeck also made just one alteration to his starting eleven from last weekend, with the injured Edgar Prib being replaced by Kenan Karman.

Statement

Timo Werner: "The relief following this win is absolutely massive. We were the better team for long periods of this game and in the end we really deserved the win."

Highlights

14th minute: Following an evenly matched opening phase in front of a 37,000 strong crowd, hosts Hannover take the lead. Hiroshi Kiyotake drives a delivery across the face of the goal from the right, finding Kenan Karaman, who has no problems forcing the ball over the line from five meters out.

16th minute: VfB are quickly back on level terms. Timo Werner sets Christian Gentner on his way down the left side. The captain dribbles his way into the penalty area and slots the ball cleverly into the far corner to equalise.

18th minute: From provider to scorer! Timo Werner makes it 2-1 for the Cannstatt Boys. Daniel Ginczek’s shot from 15 meters out is parried by Ron-Robert Zieler, but the 19 year old is perfectly placed to pounce on the free ball and slot home to make it 2-1.

90th minute: Alexandru Maxim with the decider. The midfielder makes effective use of an error in the Hannover defence to increase the VfB advantage to 3-1. Shortly afterwards, the referee blows the final whistle.

Summary

The relief at having finally secured the first three points of the season was unquestionably significant for the Cannstatt Boys. Two quick goals to answer the initial setback were all important in leading VfB to their eventual victory. The success was deserved, with trainer Alexander Zorniger’s men making use of their chances, whilst preventing the hosts from carving openings in the second period. Now VfB must look to follow up their win with another successful outing on Saturday against Borussia Mönchengladbach.
