Defeat in Berlin
VfB Stuttgart are still without their first point of the 2015/2016 season. In spite of debutant Toni Sunjic getting on the score-sheet against Hertha BSC, in the end, the hosts secured a 1-2 win. The decisive goal was conceded by the Cannstatt Boys in added time at the end of the first half, during a period when VfB were seemingly in control of the game.
Personnel
Alexander Zorniger made three changes to the eleven that began against Eintracht Frankfurt, with two of those alterations being forced. Goalkeeper Przemyslaw Tyton was on a one-match ban following his red card and was replaced between the posts by Odisseas Vlachodimos, making his first ever Bundesliga start. At the centre of defence, Timo Baumgartl was forced out with a knee problem and was replaced by new signing Toni Sunjic, making his VfB debut. In addition, Florian Klein returned from suspension to fill a spot in the back four, at the expense of Daniel Schwaab.
Statement
Christian Gentner: "It is frustrating. We continue to make simple mistakes, which are really decisive at this level. What we need to do is force a positive result and use that to build on our self-confidence."

Highlights
14th minute: With almost a quarter hour on the clock, VfB find themselves a goal down. From a throw-in from Berlin’s right defensive side, the hosts take the lead through Genki Haraguchi, who fires home from close range.
36th minute: A deserved equaliser for VfB! Daniel Didavi floats in a free-kick from the right towards the opposition goal, finding new signing Toni Sunjic rising to head home from tem meters out to make it 1-1.
45th minute + 3: The hosts are back in front! Hertha’s captain Fabian Lustenberger unleashes an unstoppable volley to make it 2-1. The goal resulted from yet another Hertha set-piece, which the defence initially cleared, but the follow up shot left Odisseas Vlachodimos without a chance.
Half-time: The Berlin side got off to the better start and took an initial lead. Following the opening goal, the Cannstatt Boys became the more attacking team, creating chances and eventually deservedly equalising. The second set-back was very unfortunate from the viewpoint of Alexander Zorniger’s side.
90th minute: In the closing phase, VfB throw everything into attack, but there is simply no way through for the lads with the infamous red hoop on their shirts against a very well-drilled Hertha defence and thus left the field of play with nothing to show for their efforts.
Summary
It’s just not been VfB’s season so far! Christian Gentner & Co. Battled back from behind in Berlin, but during a phase in which they had begun to take control of proceedings, the Cannstatt Boys suffered a further set-back. During the course of the second period, VfB were unable to force an opening and make the trip back to Stuttgart still without a point on their account.
