Pointless again

In their second home, and third Bundesliga, game of the season, VfB were once again left empty-handed on Saturday. In spite of their best efforts, VfB lacked the efficiency displayed by Eintracht Frankfurt on a swelteringly hot afternoon. To add to the missing efficiency, there was a lack of genuine opportunities on goal, some very unfortunate goals conceded and the up-hill struggle of playing catch-up with just ten men, after goalkeeper Przemyslaw Tyton was red-carded for a professional foul. In the end, Frankfurt, who painfully exposed VfB’s weaknesses, secured a 4-1 (2-1) win.

The low-down

Neither VfB nor Eintracht Frankfurt were satisfied with their prior results in the Bundesliga going into Saturday’s game. The hosts were as yet without a point, whilst the visitors had one point to their credit. The situation was particularly frustrating for the Cannstatt Boys, who had far too little to show for some very decent performances thus far.

Personnel
Trainer Alexander Zoriger made no secret of his personnel changes and made the two alterations he had previously announced. In midfield, Serey Dié was back from a muscular injury to replace Lukas Rupp, whilst Daniel Schwaab took the full-back place left open by the suspended Florian Klein.

Eintracht Frankfurt coach Armin Verh, a familiar face who was warmly welcomed in Stuttgart, also made two changes to his starting eleven, with Marc Stendera and Timothy Chandler getting the nod from the outset.

Prior to kick-off, there was an extended period of applause held in memory of the passing of VfB honorary president Gerhard Mayer-Vorfelder. The VfB team wore black armbands.

Highlights

11th minute: GOAL CONCEDED: Frankfurt are allowed to break far too easily on the left flank. In an attempt to clear the delivery to the centre from Bastian Oczipka, Adam Hlousek frustratingly turns he ball past his own keeper. Tyton is without a chance. Frustratingly, Haris Seferovic had been in an off-side position in the centre.

30th minute: EQUALISER: Following a corner, some fine play from Serey Dié proves telling. After a feined shot and quick burst forward, the midfielder delivers the ball from the right, finding Daniel Didavi slides in to level the scores – albeit once again with a suspicion of off-side.

Statement

Trainer Alexander Zorniger: "In the first half we were very much in the game, but in the second period we threw in the towel to some extent. It’s unfathomable that we have conceded ten goals in three games. We’ve got to let this sink in now. It’s just not acceptable to concede so many goals – regardless of what system you play or in which formation. You’ve got to defend and win the decisive challenges."

Post-match comments

42nd minute: Another GOAL CONCEDED – and once again down the left. The impressive Stendera Haris sends Seferovic bursting past VfB’s high-standing defence. The pass finds Luc Castaignos, who puts the guests back in front.

67th minute: Bitterly frustrating for VfB. Goalkeeper Przemyslaw Tyton advances from his goal to block Luc Castaignos, but is too late with his challenge. The Eintracht man is sent crashing to the deck – red-card for Tyton and a penalty:

69th minute: GOAL CONCEDED. Haris Seferovic slots past substituted debutant Odisseas Vlachodimos from the spot to make it 3-1. Daniel Didavi is substituted to make way for the keeper. VfB are now two goals don and reduced to ten men.

87th minute: GOAL CONCEDED: Luc Castaignos scores his second of the day to make it 1-4, as he dinks past Timo Baumgartl and slots home coolly.

90th minute + 2: All over. VfB lose the game 1-4.

The round-up

VfB concede too many goals – a deficit which seemingly cannot be counteracted with aggression or passion. Even considering weaknesses in front of goal, problems at the back, a large bundle of difficult circumstances – including missed opening and misfortune – at the end the defeat is another bitter pill for VfB to swallow. After the third game of a still young Bundesliga season, the Cannstatt Boys have nothing to show for their efforts and are still yet to pick up a point. Aside from the goal conceded, a lack of effectiveness in front of goal would appear to be a decisive factor. Maybe a little luck on their side would see VfB come out of such a game with a more positive result.
