Late defeat with ten men
Despite a massive effort and having twice taken the lead through Daniel Ginczek, VfB slipped to a 3-2 defeat away to Hamburger SV. In the 53rd minute, whilst leading 2-1, VfB were reduced to ten men following a second booking for Florian Klein. Late on, the Cannstatt Boys conceded goals number two and three.
The low-down
Both clubs managed to rescue a place in the top-flight in the final moments of the previous season and both were left empty-handed after the opening games of the current campaign. Whilst HSV crashed to Bayern Munich, having been eliminated from the DFB-Cup a week earlier, VfB were unluckily beaten in their opening home game against 1. FC Köln in spite of putting in a good performance on the day. The clash between the two tradition steeped club’s was billed as the Bundesliga’s 'Match of the Day'.
Personnel
Neither side made any changes to the starting elevens from last weekend’s defeats. With Serey Dié still out of the reckoning with a muscular injury to his hip, coach Alexander Zorniger kept fate in his starting eleven from the clash with Cologne, as did his opposite number Bruno Labbadia.
Prior to kick-off – as is the case in all games this weekend – a minutes silence was held in memory of VfB honorary president Gerhard Mayer-Vorfelder, who passed away on Monday.
Statement
Daniel Ginczek: "The defeat is very frustrating and extremely bitter. Now we’ve had two games and have zero points, but from those two games, we played really well for 150 or 160 minutes. All that’s missing are the points."

Highlights
24th minute: GOAL – 0-1: The ball is in the back of the net! Didavi plays through to Ginczek with an inch perfect pass. The striker leaves Emir Spahic trailing in his wake and slots past the HSV keeper.
34th minute: EQUALISER – 1-1: The VfB back-four has pushed out high up the pitch and reacts late as the ball falls to Hamburg defender Johan Djourou. The centre-half launches the ball long and high, finding Ivo Ilicevic, who drives his shot home. A hint of off-side but the goal counts.
42nd minute: GOAL – 1-2: Christian Gentner slices a pass with the outside of his boot to Daniel Ginczek, who keeps his cool to slot home his and VfB’s second, cutting inside keeper Adler and rolling the ball into the empty net.
51st minute: Florian Klein is booked.
53rd minute: The Austrian international again sees yellow and is duly dismissed. VfB are down to ten men.
84th minute: EQUALISER – 2-2: Ivica Olic’s seemingly wayward shot from the edge of the box is deflected by Adam Hlousek into the path of Pierre-Michel Lasogga. Tyton goes full stretch but cannot prevent the striker from driving the ball inside the near post.
89th minute: THE DECIDER – 3-2: Rising on the penalty spot, Lasogga heads the ball back into the path of defender Johan Djourou, who easily shoves the ball past the VfB keeper.
90th minute + 2: The final whistle. Ten-man VfB lose the game 3-2.
Summary
There was no joy for the Cannstatt Boys on away turf either. Once again, VfB performed well over long periods, but were once again left empty-handed in the end. Although VfB twice took the lead and were the better side for the majority of the match, the Cannstatt Boys left Hamburg’s Volksparkstadion with nothing to show for their efforts. In the first half, Zorniger’s men took the lead and were not knocked out of their stride by the home side’s avoidable equaliser.
Shortly after the restart, VfB found themselves reduced to ten men, when full-back Florian Klein saw two yellow cards in quick succession. The side dealt with the ever increasing pressure being put on by HSV until shortly before the end of the tie, but two late Hamburg goals saw VfB complete their second game of the new season with a second, disappointing defeat.
