1. FSV Mainz 05
VfB Stuttgart
Timo Werner in a duel during the game.
Points shared in Mainz
VfB return from Mainz with an away point in the bag! Over the course of the ninety minutes, coach Jürgen Kramny’s men worked well together. In the first half, the Cannstatt Boys had several chances to score, but left their opportunities untaken. In the second period, Przemyslaw Tyton was called upon to make a couple of important saves. In the end, the draw was a fair result.
Personnel
Both teams made two chances each to their starting elevens. For VfB, Georg Niedermeier and Alexandru Maxim were in from the outset, with Timo Baumgartl returning to the bench and Daniel Didavi missing out completely due to a hip problem.
Highlights
3rd minute: Mainz’s Danny Latza tests VfB keeper Przemyslaw Tyton for the first time with a low shot from the edge of the box. The Polish international has no problems getting down to smother the danger though.
10th minute: Confusion in the Mainz penalty area, but none of the Cannstatt Boys can profit from the lack of order and the host’s defence eventually manage to clear.
Statement
Jürgen Kramny: "We put on a decent team performance here in Mainz. In the first half we were very compact, we didn’t allow our opponents to create any chances and carved out openings of our own. The game swung more in the opposite direction after the break. Przemyslaw Tyton made one really great save in a particular situation. But on the other hand, we didn’t play out the odd counter-attack that we had very well. The important thing for us in the end is that we didn’t concede."

32nd minute: The ball is in the back of the home side’s net – but the celebrations form Timo Werner & Co. are abruptly cut short. The 19 year old was offside from the cross by Filip Kostic before turning the ball home.
37th minute: Misfortune for VfB! Lukas Rupp cracks a shot from the edge of the penalty area against the foot of the post.
90th minute: There are to be no goals on the evening in Mainz. Contrary to the first half, the hosts had few, but then also the better chances on goal, but when called upon, Przemyslaw Tyton was twice there to rescue a point for his side.
Summary
The good news is that trainer Jürgen Kramny’s men were compact at the back over the course of the ninety minutes and managed to keep a clean sheet for the third time this season. On a less positive note, the Cannstatt Boys were just as unsuccessful going forward as their opponents were. Particularly during the first half, Timo Werner & Co. had better chances than Mainz. After the break, VfB were unable to repeat the sort of attacking efforts made in the first 45 minutes, but they remained controlled in defence and subsequently deserved their point.
