Away defeat

It was a night to forget for VfB, as the team with the infamous red hoop on their shirts crashed to a 0-4 (0-1) defeat in Mönchengladbach. Right from the outset, Jürgen Kramny’s men struggled and made far too many errors in the first period. In spite of a determined start to the second half, VfB conceded a second and thirds goal too quickly after the break.

Personnel

The VfB coach made two changes to his starting eleven, with last weekend’s suspended Daniel Didavi beginning in place of Alexandru Maxim, to make his 50th Bundesliga appearance for VfB, and Martin Harnik getting the nod ahead of Lukas Rupp. The Austrian international was in the starting eleven for the first time since early November.

Highlights

16th minute: The host stake the lead. Fabian Johnson forces his way through on the right and breaks to the by-line, before cutting a pass back into the path of Thorgan Hazard, who is unmarked and slots home from point blank range to make it 1-0. Gladbach have been the more active of the two sides. VfB are more cautious and look solid at the back, but are making too many mistakes in their approach play and are unable to relieve the pressure on their own back-line.

43rd minute: Fortune on VfB’s side. Gladbach goal-scorer Thorgan Hazard drives the ball against the bar from eleven meters out.

45th minute: Half time in Borussia-Park. VfB never really got into the game in the first period and could create very little going forward against Borussia.

Statement

Daniel Didavi: "We were poor both in the attack and in defence – which is why we were without a chance of taking anything from this game. We didn’t get into the challenges and we were too passive. Gladbach, on the other hand, played well. We had a plan as to how we wanted to play here tonight and we should have done that."

Post-match comments

60th minute: Mönchengladbach make it 2-0! Raffael capitalises on confusion in the VfB defence and doubles the home side’s advantage.

68th minute: A third goal for the home side! Patrick Herrmann is introduced as a substitute for Gladbach and makes it 3-0 just thirty second later.

90th minute +1: Just short of the final whistle, the home side make it 4-0, with Kevin Großkreutz tuning the ball over his own goal-line to make the final score 4-0.

Summary

The VfB players need to quickly put this defeat behind them, after a night went little worked in their favour against Borussia Mönchengladbach. Up front, Filip Kostic & Co. saw little go their way, with far too much impreciseness stuttering the VfB flow in the first half. The visitor’s efforts at the beginning of the second period were quickly stagnated by Gladbach’s second goal. Now the Cannstatt Boys must quickly put tonight’s disappointment behind them and switch their thoughts to the three points up for grabs against TSG Hoffenheim this weekend.
