Three points claimed
VfB’s positive run continued on in their home clash with Hertha BSC on Saturday afternoon. Trainer Jürgen Kramny’s men secured a 2-0 win against Berlin to move on to four consecutive Bundesliga wins in 2016. Calculating back to before the winter break, it was the Cannstatt Boys fifth back-to-back league victory and their seventh game without defeat. Against the Bundesliga’s well organised third placed side, VfB had to be patient in attack and assertive in defence. The side in the shirts with the infamous red hoop found the necessary balance on Saturday and earned themselves three further points. Both goals were scored having won possession in the opposition half.
Personnel
Jürgen Kramny made four changes to the team that began in the midweek DFB-Cup clash with Dortmund. Przemyslaw Tyton, Daniel Schwaab and Timo Werner were given the nod ahead of Mitch Langerak, Toni Sunjic and Artem Kravets, whilst Alexandru Maxim filled in for the suspended Daniel Didavi.
Highlights
2nd minute: VfB put on the pressure from the outset and create an early opening. From Timo Werner’s delivery from the right, Filip Kostic gets a shot away at the back post but fires well over the crossbar.
Statement
Jürgen Kramny: "At the moment, the good feelings are predominant. We started the game well and after the break we upped the pressure and forced our opening goal with pure determination. It was unyielding commitment from Serey Dié. We are delighted about the run, but we are keeping our cool and will continue to follow our plan."
Post-match comments
45th minute: Stalemate at the half-time break. Jürgen Kramny’s men looked to get amongst the well-drilled Berlin defence, and managed to create a few openings, but unfortunately lacked precision with the final ball. VfB will have to continue to be cautious not to be caught out on the break by the visitors.
51st minute: Goal for VfB! Serey Dié lets fly from the edge of the penalty area with the outside of his right boot and sinks the ball into the far corner, to make it 1-0 for the Cannstatt Boys. The Ivory Coast international started the move himself, winning back the ball bravely after VfB had given away possession.
84th minute: That should be the decided! VfB again put the visitors under pressure and force an error before getting the ball through to Filip Kostic, who converts from point blank range to make it 2-0.
90th minute: In added time, Martin Harnik is denied by Rune Jarstein. Shortly after, the final whistle is blown on the Cannstatt Boys fifth consecutive Bundesliga victory.
Summary
This game was further proof as to just how stable VfB are at the moment. In the first half, the Cannstatt Boys were confronted by a defensive opponent, who closed down the spaces cleverly, although the hosts did manage to create a number of openings. Having then taken the lead, Daniel Schwaab & Co. were solid in the challenges against an ever more courageous opponent and allowed very little through at the back. At the other end, VfB continued to create chances and, in spite of having to deal with a number of disputed situations, rose to the challenge and decided the tie in their favour.
